New Fellowships & Increased Funding

web.illus.1.jpgWe're pleased to announce two significant new student fellowships: The Rona Jaffe Foundation Graduate Fellowship in Creative Writing and The Iraq Veterans Writing Fellowship. (Note: All incoming students to the Creative Writing Program receive Departmental Fellowships, in varying amounts, in the form of tuition remission credits. Many students also receive additional funding from the fellowship programs listed below. For more information, see fellowships and outreach.)

In recognition of the special contributions women writers make to our culture and society, Rona Jaffe (1931-2005) established The Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers’ Awards program in 1995. It is the only national literary awards program dedicated to supporting women writers exclusively. Since the program began, the Foundation has awarded more than $750,000 to a total of 86 women.

The Iraq Veterans Writing Workshop will be the Creative Writing Program’s fourth literary outreach program. The graduate students who teach the workshops will have an opportunity to provide an important service to the veteran population and will also be able to share their talents as writers and teachers in a meaningful way. Moreover, the program will provide generous fellowship support for participating students ($11,000 stipend plus half tuition remission). We have selected one Veterans Writing Fellow for our pilot year (08-09) and hope to expand the program to include more Fellows in 09-10.

In addition, beginning in 08-09 all graduate student Starworks fellows will receive substantially more compensation for the work they do with hospitalized children (08-09 fellows will receive a minimum of $11,000 stipend and half tuition remission which is up from as little as $3,000 annual stipend and zero tuition remission in past years).
